“Astunwiq aljamal” is a saying attributed to the pre-Islamic poet Tarafa ibn al-Abd when he was young. He heard a poet say, “And he forgets his sorrow when he is close to death, lamented by the Sayyarite women with their neckpieces.” When Tarafa heard this verse, he said, “The camel’s neckpiece has been transferred,” meaning that the camel lost its neckpiece and became a camel, not a camel anymore. The reason for Tarafa saying this was that the “Sayyarite women” referred to a necklace worn by camels, not by camels. The meaning of the verse is that the poet is saying that when sorrows befall him, he finds relief by riding a fast-tested camel. This saying became popular and is used to describe situations where roles and circumstances change unexpectedly.
