Vicuna
The vicuna is a genus of mammals belonging to the camelids family, found in the mountains of South America. It is closely related to the llama and is considered important to the local population due to the quality of its wool. This tradition is called “tchaku,” and it is repeated every two years to allow the fur to grow. The animals are hunted by capturing vicuñas between V-shaped nets, known as “manga nets.” After an ingenious setup by the locals, both young and old participate in this tradition. Once they successfully capture the vicuñas, they shear the animals, leaving only what keeps them warm, and then release them to return after two years. Their sustenance during this period comes from the total proceeds of wool sales.
